Official e-Services in the USA for the Polish Diaspora: my Social Security, IRS Account, USCIS, Login.gov, and ID.me (2026)

Duplicate SSN cards, IRS installment payments, and N-400 citizenship applications – all online. How Login.gov (requires SSN) and ID.me (also works from Poland) function, what disappeared in 2026 (Direct File eliminated, Polish IRS pages removed), and where you can still receive service in Polish (SSA with free translators).

The queue at the Social Security office, hours on the IRS hotline, a letter from USCIS that takes weeks – most of these issues can now be resolved online in just a few minutes. The American administration has quietly digitized: through the my Social Security account, you can order a duplicate SSN card and certificates, in the IRS account you can set up installment payments for taxes, and you can submit a citizenship application (N-400) entirely online. This guide walks you through all the key e-services in the USA from the perspective of the Polish diaspora – including what no longer exists in 2026 (Direct File eliminated, Polish IRS pages removed) and where you can still receive service in Polish (SSA!).

The Key to Everything: Login.gov and ID.me

  • Login.gov is a single government account for dozens of agencies (SSA, USAJOBS, Global Entry…). Identity verification requires: a state driver's license/ID or a US passport, SSN, and a US phone number or address. Mandatory two-factor authentication. Languages: English, Spanish, French, Chinese – Polish is not available.
  • ID.me is a private, officially accepted identity provider (IRS, SSA, VA, Medicare): verification with a document and selfie, and if the automated process fails – a video call with a consultant (“Trusted Referee”). Important for those splitting their lives between countries: according to SSA, ID.me works from outside the USA – you can create and manage your account from Poland.
  • Order Note: the rule of “only .gov domains” has two official exceptions – ID.me and CLEAR are legal government partners. Treat everything else that is “government-like” outside of .gov with suspicion.

my Social Security: The Most Important Account for the Polish Diaspora

At ssa.gov/myaccount, you can handle without phone calls and visits: duplicate SSN cards, address changes, direct deposit account changes, benefit verification letters, tax forms, a complete earnings history, and retirement forecasts at various ages – and starting in 2026, also online repayment of overpayments. Two things to know:

  • Old SSA logins are becoming history: accounts created using the old method (username from a few years ago) require transitioning to Login.gov or ID.me – do this at your next login before you lose access.
  • SSA is the last bastion of Polish language in federal administration: the ssa.gov/multilanguage page has a “Polish” section with brochures and – most importantly – free phone translators upon request. Use this, especially for retirement matters (we discuss combining US-Poland pensions in our guide on US and Poland pensions).

Change in Language Climate (2025/2026): following the decree establishing English as the official language of the USA, the old rule guaranteeing service in other languages was repealed – the lep.gov service was suspended, and IRS removed its Polish pages (irs.gov/pl now returns a 404 error; the IRS language list has shrunk to 7 languages without Polish). Multilingual services have become discretionary and are shrinking – do not assume that a Polish version of anything will exist in a year; for difficult matters, bring a trusted bilingual person or request a phone translator (SSA still provides this; in hospitals, a translator is still your right – see our guide on free translators in hospitals).

IRS Account: Taxes Without Queues

  • IRS Online Account (login via ID.me or Login.gov): balances for individual years, transcripts (including AGI needed for e-filing), refund status, digital correspondence, immediate payments or planned for the upcoming year, payment history for 5 years, and – very practically – setting up and changing installment plans online.
  • Direct File does not exist: the government’s free filing program was eliminated in 2025 (pages return 404). The free option remains Free File – commercial programs at no cost for AGI incomes up to $89,000 (for the 2025 tax year) and Fillable Forms without limit; free live assistance is provided by the VITA program (income up to ~69k USD, individuals 60+, and those needing language support).
  • ITIN (tax number for individuals without SSN – e.g., spouses without status) is still handled exclusively on paper (W-7, approx. 7–11 weeks) – there is no online path.

USCIS Online: From Green Card to Citizenship

  • The myUSCIS account allows you to submit fully electronically a dozen forms – including N-400 (citizenship application), I-90 (green card replacement), I-130, I-131, I-765, or address change AR-11 – with prompts to minimize errors, payment by card, and case tracking. You can check processing times in the official tool at egov.uscis.gov/processing-times.
  • The old “InfoPass” visits are no longer available – contact is through self-service tools, the chatbot Emma (English and Spanish), and the hotline 800-375-5283; in-office meetings are only by appointment.
  • Security: USCIS will never ask you to pay over the phone, via Western Union, Venmo, or gift cards – and a “notario público” has no right to handle immigration matters. A complete guide to verifying offices and representatives is available in our guide on recognizing legitimate sources in the USA.

Other Accounts Worth Having

ServicePurpose
Medicare.govAccount for Medicare card (login: ID.me, CLEAR, Login.gov, or personal) – plans, claims, replacement cards; basics of Medicare in our Medicare guide in Polish
USPS Informed DeliveryFree preview of incoming mail (scans of envelopes) – invaluable when waiting for letters from USCIS/IRS
Pay.govOfficial payments to federal agencies (e.g., SSA overpayments)
myE-VerifySelf Check (check your employment data) and Self Lock – lock SSN from being used by fraudsters with employers
State PortalsIllinois: ilsos.gov (drivers) and IDES (benefits); New York: MyDMV via NY.gov ID (the state guarantees oral translations, Polish is among the top languages in NY); New Jersey: MVC online and benefits portal

Evening Plan: (1) create a Login.gov account (SSN + state ID) and link it to my Social Security – check your earnings history right away, as errors are easier to correct in real time; (2) create an IRS account and download your transcript; (3) enable USPS Informed Delivery; (4) have immigration matters – use myUSCIS instead of paper; (5) remember the security rule: US offices send letters – a phone call demanding money “immediately” is always a scam; (6) we describe Polish e-services for matters across the ocean in a twin guide on Polish e-offices from abroad.
