The flight to Canada starts at 7 dollars – that’s how much (and not a cent more) the eTA costs on the official government website; intermediary sites will charge you ten times that for the same service. It gets more interesting: a dual citizen PL+CA cannot board the plane on a Polish passport, kabanosy in your suitcase are banned in both directions, and for a 9-hour delay with a major airline, you are entitled to up to 1000 CAD. This guide compiles the travel rules Poland–Canada for 2026 in both directions – documents, customs, food, cash, passenger rights, cars, and pets – based on information from canada.ca, CBSA, CFIA, and travel.gc.ca.
Documents: Who Needs What
| Traveler | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Polish citizen flying to Canada | Passport + eTA (7 CAD, valid for 5 years or until the passport expires – new passport = new eTA). Standard stay up to 6 months. Note: eTA applies only to air travel – entry by car/bus/ship from the USA does not require it. |
| PR holder (Canadian resident) | eTA is not applicable – a valid PR card (or PRTD travel document) is required to board the plane. Important: PR status does not expire on its own – individuals who "once had PR" may still formally have it. |
| Dual citizen PL+CA | To board the plane to Canada, only a Canadian passport is allowed (the carrier will not let you on with a Polish one; there is an emergency option called "special authorization" – flight within 10 days, valid for 4 days). To enter Poland, you must use your Polish passport. Conclusion: travel with both passports. |
| Canadian (e.g., spouse) traveling to Poland | Visa-free for 90/180 days in the Schengen area; biometric checks at the border EES (details in our guide on EES and ETIAS); ETIAS is planned for late 2026 – applications have not yet started, any site "accepting applications" is a scam. |
Customs to Canada: Limits and the Great Sausage Ban
- Exemptions for returning residents: under 24 hours – none; after 24 hours – 200 CAD (if exceeded, duty on the entire amount); after 48 hours – 800 CAD with alcohol and tobacco within limits (duty only on the excess). Personal limits, do not combine within a family.
- Alcohol (48 hours+): 1.5 liters of wine or 1.14 liters of spirits or 8.5 liters of beer. Tobacco: 200 cigarettes – but duty-free only with the stamp "duty paid Canada"; Polish packs count towards a special rate.
- Guests: the same quantity limits; gifts up to 60 CAD/piece are duty-free (do not wrap them tightly – CBSA may want to inspect).
- Food – this is the most painful part: according to CFIA, from countries other than the USA, “fresh, dried, and smoked/cured meats (hams, sausages) are not allowed” – kabanosy, wiejska, and krakowska are out; only commercially sealed canned/jarred meat is allowed, shelf-stable without refrigeration (up to 20 kg, only in luggage – never by mail). Dairy: only cheese, ice cream, and yogurt are allowed (butter is not!). No problem: bread and sweets without meat (20 kg), chocolate, honey (20 kg), most fish. Declare every food item – the penalty for non-declaration can be up to 1300 CAD.
- On the way back to Poland: EU standard – 430 EUR limit, 200 cigarettes, 1 liter of spirits + 4 liters of wine + 16 liters of beer and total ban on meat and dairy from outside the EU (Canadian maple syrup – absolutely OK). Full rules in the guide on crossing the Polish border.
- Cash: declaration required for amounts over 10,000 CAD when entering and exiting Canada (also for shipments; with amounts of 10k+ you cannot use NEXUS) and for 10,000 EUR in the EU. There is no limit – there is an obligation to declare; undeclared funds are subject to seizure.
- Clever facilitation: optional Advance Declaration (successor to ArriveCAN) – customs declaration up to 72 hours before landing, faster kiosks in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. In summer 2026, expect crowds – Canada is co-hosting the World Cup.
Flights and Passenger Rights: APPR vs EU261
- The only direct connection is the year-round LOT Warsaw–Toronto (other routes require transfers; check the current schedule before purchasing tickets).
- Direction to Canada and flights from Canada – APPR: with major carriers, delays caused by the airline entitle you to 400 CAD (3–6 hours), 700 CAD (6–9 hours), 1000 CAD (9 hours+); denied boarding – up to 2400 CAD; meal after 2 hours, hotel for overnight stays, claims within a year, airline response within 30 days. APPR reform is ongoing (the project from December 2024 would eliminate loopholes for "disruption categories") – check the final status on the CTA website.
- Departure from Poland – EU261: LOT flight from Warsaw is subject to EU regulations (600 EUR for a delay of 3 hours+ on this distance) – details and procedures in the guide on passenger rights. Practice: on transatlantic routes, you have protection in both directions – take advantage of the more favorable one for your flight.
Driving on Both Sides
- Polish citizen in Ontario: as a visitor for up to 3 months, you can drive with a Polish driver's license; for longer stays, you need a international driver's license obtained BEFORE arrival (in Poland: county office, 35 PLN). Settling down? Poland does not have an exchange agreement with Ontario – you will face tests (vision, theory, practical exams), although from July 1, 2026, you can count up to 12 months of foreign experience based on an official certificate. Other provinces have their own lists – check locally.
- Canadian in Poland: travel.gc.ca states clearly – IDP is mandatory, obtained before departure (CAA, valid for one year). They will also benefit from our guide on driving in Poland (limit 0.2 promille!).
Pets in Travel
Poland is not on Canada's list of rabies-free countries, so a dog or cat from Poland needs a valid rabies vaccination certificate signed by a veterinarian (no quarantine and no waiting period for pets) – an EU pet passport is generally sufficient if the vaccination entry is in English or French (confirm your case with the CFIA/AIRS tool before the flight). Note for routes through the USA: from August 2024, the US CDC will have its own requirements for dogs (import form) – this also applies to layovers.
Packages Between Countries
- To Canada: gifts up to 60 CAD/piece are free of charge (not alcohol/tobacco); meat by mail is completely banned – even cans that can be brought personally. Kabanosy in a holiday package = confiscation.
- To Poland: the EU ban on meat and dairy also applies to shipments; customs duties and VAT according to standard EU thresholds.
Travel Checklist: (1) eTA only on canada.ca (7 CAD) – best before purchasing tickets; (2) dual citizens: both passports in carry-on luggage; (3) suitcase without cold cuts and butter – in both directions; chocolate, sweets, and yellow cheese can legally go to Canada; (4) cash over 10,000 CAD/EUR – declare; (5) delay of 3 hours+? Check if the flight qualifies for EU261 (from Poland) or APPR (to/from Canada) – and demand specifics; (6) longer stay for parents visiting you in Canada is a topic for Super Visa – guide on sponsoring family and Super Visa.
